Canada Day Long Weekend 2006 - Washington & Oregon - Mount St. Helens

RIDE INFORMATION & MAP BELOW

Mount St Helens is a great long weekend biker destination.  We combined it with a trip down the Oregon Coast, returning north through Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument as well as Mt Rainier National Park.  We began our trip after a day of work and spent the first night in Omak, Washington.

On DAY 2, we continued on through Leavenworth and the stunning Cascades heading west towards the coast line to Port Angeles.    The Cascades alone are a great long weekend trip of twisty roads to enjoy.  If you like to be in the company of a lot of bikers, you'll be in heaven in the Cascades.  We also took the time to travel up to Hurricane Ridge just out of Port Angeles the following morning.  Stunning views and twisty roads await all the way to the top.

DAY 3 took us along the coast and Olympic Peninsula to Astoria, Oregon.  Astoria is located at the mouth of the Columbia River and a great overnight stay and stunning location.  Traveling over the huge bridge crossing the Columbia River at its widest point is definitely impressive.

DAY 4 took us through the Mt St Helens Volcanic National Park, onto Mt Rainier National Park with our last overnight stay in Moses Lake, before heading home.

RIDE LENGTH - Long Weekend - 3 to 5 days depending on route
BEST APPROACH TO MOUNT ST HELENS - We recommend travelling via Woodland, Cougar and north to Randle.  The road from Cougar up to Mt St Helens is a curve paradise and in  really good shape.  Doing these curves up the mountain and under power is great fun.  The road back down to Randle is in marginal shape and therefore best reserved for the downhill part of the day.
BEST PARTS - As already mentioned, the uphill approach from Cougar will put a big biker grin on your face.  The most spectacular part of the day will be the great scenery.  Make sure to take the side roads into the National Park which is possible in several places.  Don't miss any of them.  It's well worth it.  The destruction caused by the May 18th, 1980 eruption is fascinating and mind boggling.  Riding past Randle to the Mt Rainier National Park and over some incredible high mountain passes was awesome.  Yes, we even got to have a snow ball fight in the middle of summer!
GAS STOPS - You will need to be topped up before heading into the Volcanic Monument.  Gas up in Woodland.  Randle is the next stop!
